Perfect for just realigning the edges. If I wanted to sharpen my knife I'll use a stone, and not those steels that have grooves. It has a true polished surface unlike some of the other so-called polished smooth surfaces. I was a little uneasy trying the oval shape cause I was used to the round, but its really easy to get used to and I would now probably prefer the oval shape. F. Dick products have never really let me down.
